How to Balance Workplace Wellbeing and Productivity
1 min read
As companies advocate for more office-based work, supporting workplace wellbeing is key to ensuring employee satisfaction and maximizing productivity. The number of in-office days for hybrid employees is expected to increase over the next few years. Therefore, organizations must prioritize the balance of wellbeing and productivity in their office environment.
Research shows that employee expectations for 8 out of 12 wellbeing factors are unmet when working in the office. In addition to the cost and time of the commute, the temperature, noise, lack of individual focus space, and limited food options decrease employee satisfaction. Health and nutrition are also important factors in many people’s daily lives, and this is no different when they spend an increasing amount of time in the office. Most social activity between coworkers revolves around grabbing lunch or coffee, so employers must invest in food-related amenities. Offering staff restaurants and cafes with a range of well-balanced options can contribute to overall employee satisfaction and company culture.
The growing adoption of collaborative spaces in offices has resulted in a lack of individual spaces. Many employees are involved in a mix of in-person and online meetings. Despite the enhanced collaboration from being in the office, there are distractions from nearby workers joining meetings from their desks. Employers must carefully consider the effect repurposing individual space for collaborative spaces has on productivity.
Demand for offices with outdoor spaces is rising as employees appreciate the wellness benefits of greenery and fresh air. Enhanced outdoor spaces, including courtyards, roof gardens, green spaces, and terraces, offer employees an area to relax and recharge throughout the day. Another highly valued amenity is access to on-site or nearby healthcare services, which can reduce the required time off for routine medical needs.
As companies increase the number of days employees are in the office, focusing on wellbeing is essential for maintaining satisfaction and productivity. By investing in thoughtful office layouts, food amenities, and enhanced outdoor spaces, organizations create an office environment that fosters both wellness and productivity.
