Lower Don Lands Redevelopment
1 read.
The Port Lands were once the largest wetlands on the Great Lakes. Around 1880, the region underwent gradual filling to expand the land available for industry and shipping purposes. Although primarily utilized for industrial, the area suffers from inadequate infrastructure. A significant portion of the area is vulnerable to flooding from the Don River.
The Lower Don Lands redevelopment is a $1.3-billion, 10-year flood protection project of 125 hectares or 308 acres. The project is planned to include a transformation of the Don River mouth to eliminate the flood risk and re-route the current path the river flows.
In February 2024, Waterfront Toronto began the process of flooding the newly transformed river. In total, the process took 2-3 weeks to re-fill the 1.3-kilometre river.
The Port Lands Flood Protection Project aspect of the Lower Don Lands redevelopment is planned to be completed in 2024. The second phase will include new mixed-use communities around the mouth of the Don River.
