Rooms + Spaces to Take Over Vacant Bed Bath and Beyond Storefronts

3 min read.

On March 8th of 2023, Bed Bath and Beyond officially closed its doors to all its stores across Canada and filed for bankruptcy on April 23rd, 2023.This has resulted in 54 Bed Bath and Beyond and 11 BuyBuy BABY Stores closing, alongside approximately 1,400 job losses. So, what will be happening to these now vacant retail spaces?

Doug Putman is a Canadian business executive and is the owner of Toys “R” Us, Sunrise Records, HMV UK, and many other companies as well. Doug plans to launch his latest retail chain Rooms + Spaces in 21 of the former Bed Bath and Beyond and BuyBuy BABY storefronts across Canada by early July.

Rooms + Spaces is a home and décor retail store; it will cater to the modern shopper carrying a broad range of products. With the acquired 800,000 square feet, there will be plenty of space to house this vast array of products.

Here is a list of the first 21 Rooms + Spaces locations to be launched in Canada:

    • Langley City Square - 19860 Langley Bypass, Langley

    • 1740 West Broadway, Vancouver

    • Mayfair - 775 Finlayson St, Victoria

    • Orchard Plaza - 1540 Keehn Rd., Kelowna

    • Brentwood Village - 3630 Brentwood Rd., Calgary

    • Chinook Station - 306 Glenmore Trail SW., Calgary

    • South Edmonton Common - 2021-98 St. NW., Edmonton

    • West Edmonton Mall - 8882 170 St., Edmonton

    • Grasslands - 4855 Gordon Rd., Regina

    • Preston West - 1709 Preston Avenue N., Saskatoon

    • Bell Front Shopping Centre - 366 North Front St., Belleville

    • Smartcentres - 70 Pinebush Rd., Cambridge

    • Green Lane Centre - 1-18126 Yonge St., East Gwillimbury

    • The Boardwalk - 225 The Boardwalk, Kitchener

    • Westwood Centre - 3325 Wonderland Rd., London

    • Bayview Ridge Shopping Centre - 225 High Tech Rd., Richmond Hill

    • 5487 Hazeldean Rd., Stittsville

    • Heritage Greene - 1783 Stone Church Rd. E., Stoney Creek

    • Thickson Ridge Shopping Centre - 1650 Victoria St. E., Whitby

    • RioCan Colossus Centre - 67 Colossus Drive, Woodbridge

    • The Village Shopping Centre - 430 Topsail Rd., St. John’s

Doug also noted that Toys “R” US will be moving into 9 of the former Bed Bath and Beyond locations and Babies “R” us will be moving into two. This will expand the total locations across the country to 107. The stores are planned to have 7 in Alberta and British Columbia, and the remaining will be spread across Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia. Scheduled to open through the summer into October 2023.

Additionally, Canadian Tire announced that they will be taking over 10 of the former Bed Bath and Beyond locations and converting them into Mark’s Work Warehouse and Pro Hockey Life locations. These relocations will be taking place across Alberta in Grande Prairie, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, and Strathcona County as well as a location in British Columbia and Ontario.

In total Canadian Tire will acquire 242,000 square feet of retail space, with the ability to offer new Canadians a wider range of products.

Out of the 54 closed Bed Bath and Beyond stores, only 31 are spoken for and the question remains, what will happen with these vacant storefronts?
